This play is a reworked version of murderplays’ own ‘Who Killed the Director?’ title. Switching the original to a Christmas setting makes for a fiendishly festive murder mystery! It’s not so much ‘Ho, Ho, Ho’ as ‘Who, Who, Who?’
‘Who Killed the Director, Christmas Edition?’ is a 3 act play with a running time of just over an hour. It has a cast of 8 named characters- 3 male, 3 female, and 2 of either. (Yet with doubling-up it’s possible to perform with just 6 actors.)
The play’s set on a snowy evening three days before Christmas at the fictional Footlight’s Theatre in the quiet village of Finkleton Fold. ‘The Powder Keg Players’, led by the dynamic Ralph Valentine, are rehearsing a murder play of their own called ‘In the Bleak Midwinter’. Rehearsals are not going well, however, and with opening night approaching petty jealousies and rivalries have started to surface. Yet the show’s abruptly shut down altogether when Ralph’s stabbed for real. Back-stabbing is common in all drama groups, but who’s taken that expression far, far too literally?
Could it be…Prudence Du Maurier, the society’s overly-dramatic leading lady?
Russell DuMaurier, Prudence’s son, the moody, uncooperative leading man?
Gloria Sunshine, the deluded newcomer?
Ronald Gibbs, the dim-witted stage manager?
Or…Marge Tubbs an unscrupulous property dealer?
Detective Angood takes centrestage as he attempts to save Christmas by solving a particularly Machiavellian murder case.
