The year is 1954 and world-famous murder mystery writer Agnes Dalrimple has been invited to present a talk on her work at the tiny rural village of Milton Tweedings. To assist with her presentation, the local drama group have been tasked with acting out Miss Dalrimple’s latest play, a comic whodunit named ‘Murder Most Fowl!’. This piece, set out on a remote farm in the fictional district of ‘Scarsdale’, centres around the brutal murder of local farmer Amos Ramsbottom. Amos is found stabbed, hung up by his feet inside a rickety barn which doubles as a chicken coop. But who would want to consign poor Amos to that great farmyard in the sky? Could it be...
Constance, his discontented wife?
Son Tom, of whom so much is expected yet who’s struggling to fill his father’s Wellingtons!?
Local butcher, Burt Lard, owner of the thriving business, ‘Lard’s Larder’? Or...
Lottie Belcher, Scarsdale’s bull-ish Lady Mayoress?
Veteran detective, Miss Mabel Nippitt, has her work cut out seeking out those chicken nuggets of truth in her bid to sort out the wheat from the chaff… as have the audience! It’s time to crack a few eggs...!!
The play-within-a-play nature of this show adds a humorous twist to a piece which parodies the great murder-mystery-writing-era of Agatha Christie!
‘Who Killed the Farmer?’ has an approximate running time of one hour and fifteen minutes. It has 7 characters, 4F/3M, however Agnes, the visiting writer, can also be played by a male actor (Arthur), hence the play can be also be delivered by 3F/4M. There’s no facility for doubling up, but all 7 characters have significant roles.
The rural setting of ‘Who Killed the Farmer?’, and its tongue in cheek exploration of how whodunits are constructed, have made it a popular title with village groups. Its focus on the concerns of an inept group of actors struggling to stage a whodunit have made it popular among drama groups, too!!
