  • Who Killed the Postmistress?

The murder mystery that signs, seals and de-livers!!

Presenters ‘Clem Bakewell’ and ‘Darcy Spraggon’ present a specially extended version of the TV show, ‘Crimes from Bygone Times’. They’ve spared no expense (they really haven’t!) to present a dramatic reconstruction of the ‘Penny Black Murder’ which took place in the quaint Hampshire* village of Windy Rannets on 13th July 1985, Live Aid Day. Indeed, at exactly the same time that Bob Geldof was ‘ever so politely’ asking for public donations at Wembley Stadium, stand-in Postmistress, Penny Black, was being ‘returned to sender’. She was found sprawled on the floor of her Post Office with a post sack over her head and a letter opener protruding from her stomach. But which pair were responsible for ‘dispatching her to that Great Sorting Office in the sky’ without so much as a ‘Handle with Care’ sticker?

‘Cole Black’, Penny’s husband and the official Postmaster of Windy Rannets?

Smooth Operator ‘Patrick Cowper’ (Postman Pat), Windy Rannets’ overly amorous postman?

‘Vienna Cowper’, Patrick’s fiery wife and local artist.

‘Mimsy Tweedle’, a local pensioner? Or…

‘Phil Latter-List’, A mystery visitor to Windy Rannets?

‘Detective Inspector Dart’ challenges the Crimes from Bygone Times viewers in the audience to try to solve the case, just as he/she did in 1985.

(*Any location ‘reasonably close’ to London will suffice.)

The piece parodies the 80s (and its music in particular) as it presents a Post Office scandal the like of which won’t be seen for decades. (For four decades to be precise!)

‘Who Killed the Postmistress?’ has an approximate running time of one hour and fifteen minutes. As written, it can either be performed by 8 or 9 actors (either 3M/3F plus 2 of either, or 3M/3F plus 3 of either). All the characters have significant roles.

Please CONTACT US to request a FREE copy of Act 1 of this play.

**This piece is a full-length, ‘dramatised’ version of the murderplays Mystery Short ‘Signed, Sealed and De-Livered!’
